Dan joins law enforcement to escaped a trouble past. His work is the pulse of his existence, but finds no peace. Dan’s search for life’s purpose is perplexed by flashbacks, and crime’s escalating nature. Dan and Ben walk a tight rope. Dan’s rebellious nature clashes with his superiors, but evil is the major antagonists.
The first of four thrusts is a comparison of crimes motivated by need verses greed revealing Dan’s compassion and incredulity. A second contrasting social decay with hope, motivating Dan returns to his religious roots, and accept the Bible as God’s Handbook of life. The third presents society dropouts confronting lost hope and broken ambitions.
During Dan’s encounters he ponders being created with purpose, wondering what has gone wrong. He realizes most crimes are not personal, but result from a ‘heart disease’-sin.
Finally, Dan takes a fishing trip encountering the importance of our world view of origin. He decides a major element is a person’s actions mirror their beliefs. Since evolution provides no future, it preaches every man for himself.
In the final chapter, Dan has a chance meeting which sets the stage for romance in the next book. Also, a new “itch”: “Has God walked away from man, since man has rejected Him?”

The story continues as Dan discovers a second itch, during the Day Run patrol: 'Where did all this evil originate? And why must it be?' Dan Black and his partner Ben White, encounter murdering bank robbers without conscience. Dan takes the senseless crime personal, and pledges their demise, but finds progress less than satisfactory. The search for the murderers abounds with police officer street encounters: from disoriented and disorderly to rape and murder, from prodigals to rescues, and in it all the humor of life’s ironies abound.
Dan faces serious frustrations with failing concepts of rehabilitation and crime’s escalating violence.
The search for the bank murderers pits Dan against the evil Ischyres, taking him to a poker game out of his jurisdiction, where two surprises await. One is a familiar face, Flo, [back by reader demand] who later provides valuable information on the villains.
Dan’s story is not without personal life struggles. Nancy’s unavoidable upcoming lengthy and distant residency threatens to force on them hardship of a lengthy long distant relationship. In his journey he takes time out to visit an old friend, and is reminded of the lesson of the yellow ducky. There he begins to piece together the answers to the origin and existence of evil. He finds little comfort in the fact it must exist, and pursues solace in renewing his effort to oppose it with his total being. The budding optimism in Dan’s life is threatened.
Vol. 2 closes with certain elations and disappointments, leading into Vol. 3. A final confrontation with Ischyres, and Dan being confronting with the real and ever present risk of police work.
